Lagos Fashion Week: A whirlwind of glamour, heritage, and heart

From the moment I touched down in Lagos, it was one social event after another and that’s just how things roll back home. The energy, the buzz, the people, it’s unlike anywhere else. After just a few hours of rest, I headed straight out to support a friend at the launch of Body Shop at the British High Commissioner’s residence, a stylish and exciting start to the week.
A few days later, I had the honour of joining a panel discussion on African fashion then and now, reflecting on the past 15 years and the incredible journey of the industry. Sharing how Lagos Fashion Week has helped shape African fashion, giving brands like Eki Silk visibility, credibility, and access to key international and local players was truly a highlight.
Next came an intimate gathering at the Nigerian Stock Exchange, celebrating LFW’s impact over the years. I wasn’t sure what to expect - speeches, perhaps a few photos - but I was soon ushered into a private boardroom, face-to-face with RnB star Ciara, alongside high-profile officials, the Lagos State Governor, and the LFW founders. Before I knew it, I was whisked away in a convoy to the Governor’s residence for an intimate lunch with Ciara. A few of us were even called to the stage to speak about the growth of African fashion. I nearly fell off my chair when my name was announced, but I managed to share a narrative on our journey so far.
In the lead-up to show day, fittings ran smoothly, and it was such a joy working with our intern to select models, seeing familiar faces, and perfecting their walks.
Show day 1st November began with morning rehearsals. Watching Carol, our private model and dear friend, practise her walk was a reminder of why we do this - every step tells a story. By the afternoon, nerves were starting to creep in. I had a makeup session lined up - just for my eyes - because Nigerian MUAs are very enthusiastic with piling on the make up but I didn't want the full glam!
By 6pm, we gathered in the lobby with friends all dressed in Eki Silk, while the videographer captured every exciting moment. From there, we headed to Federal Palace Hotel, mingling, getting photographed, and doing a few interviews. The tent was packed, oversubscribed partly thanks to Ciara’s appearance - and although it was a bit of a scramble for my guests to reach their FROW and VIP seats, everyone eventually settled in.
Meanwhile, I headed backstage with my closest friend, who has been my rock in styling and dressing the models over the years. Without her, the show simply wouldn’t have come together, she truly was a star.
And then… lights, camera, action! The models stepped onto the runway to the pulsating sounds of Made Kuti, with our signature Eki Silk print as the backdrop. The crowd loved every second. Then came the finale, and it was my turn to walk out. As many times as I’ve done this, I’ve never particularly enjoyed the spotlight but this time, I felt my dad’s spirit with me. That energy carried me forward, and I truly owned the stage.
And just like that it was over. Every nerve, every rehearsal, every late night and early morning of preparation culminated in a moment of pride, joy, and celebration. From the first beat of Made Kuti’s music to the final bow, I loved every single minute. The runway wasn’t just a showcase of a collection; it was a living tribute to heritage, rhythm, and heart, a story I’ll carry with me forever.
